Ironshield Home Protection: Seasonal Home Maintenance Checklist

Keep your home safe, efficient, and protected year-round. Follow these seasonal tips to extend the life of your systems and appliances—and avoid costly repairs.

 

❄ Winter

✅ Schedule annual furnace maintenance with a certified technician.
✅ Inspect and sweep wood-burning stove connectors, pipes, and chimneys.
✅ Check all appliances for gas leaks (look and smell).
✅ Insulate pipes in crawl spaces and attics.
✅ Clear debris from gutters, downspouts, window wells, and storm drains.
✅ Clean dryer exhaust ducts, dampers, and space beneath the dryer.
✅ Inspect attic ventilation with a certified technician.
✅ Check caulking around doors and windows.
✅ Clean kitchen exhaust hoods and air filters regularly.
✅ Inspect water hoses and shutoff valves on washers, dishwashers, and refrigerator ice makers.

🌸 Spring

✅ Check light bulbs for correct wattage.
✅ Consider flood or lightning protection (not covered by IronShield).
✅ Schedule AC inspection and maintenance with a certified technician.
✅ Trim shrubs and plants near the AC unit.
✅ Schedule annual roof inspection. Optional roof protection is available.

🍂 Fall

✅ Flush hot water heater and test pressure relief valve.
✅ Schedule heating system maintenance.
✅ Protect pipes from freezing; drain sprinkler systems.
✅ Schedule chimney sweep and fireplace inspection.
✅ Check caulking around doors and windows.
✅ Inspect painted surfaces for damage, mildew, or wear.
✅ Insulate outdoor faucets and pipes in unheated spaces.
✅ Remove bird nests from chimneys and exterior electrical fixtures.
✅ Clean dust from smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

☀ Summer

✅ Schedule air conditioning maintenance before peak season.
✅ Keep curtains or blinds closed during the hottest parts of the day.
✅ Use exhaust fans while cooking.
✅ Close registers in unused rooms (no more than 25% of home area).
✅ Caulk and weather-strip windows.
✅ Set thermostat to 78°F.
✅ Close fireplace flues when not in use.
✅ Move furniture away from vents and radiators.
✅ Replace filters in forced-air systems.
✅ Use energy-efficient lighting (CFL or LED).
